{"id":1512,"date":"2021-06-17T01:45:41","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T08:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/simivalleydaycamp.com\/?p=1512"},"modified":"2021-09-01T09:32:11","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T16:32:11","slug":"lava-lamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simivalleydaycamp.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/17\/lava-lamp\/","title":{"rendered":"Lava Lamp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The lava lamps you see in the stores use wax and heat to work.\u00a0 The light bulb heats up the wax at the bottom of the lamp.\u00a0 As it gets hot, the wax expands and it&#8217;s density decreases.\u00a0 When the density of the wax is lower than the density of the water, the wax floats to the top of the lamp.\u00a0 When the wax is at the top and away from the light bulb, it begins to cool back down.\u00a0 As it cools, it shrinks and it&#8217;s density increases.\u00a0 This makes it sink back to the bottom where the process starts all over again!<\/p>\n<p>We are going to make a lava lamp that doesn&#8217;t need electricity and heat.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll need:<br \/>\nA flat bottomed test test with a cap or a small jar<br \/>\nFood coloring<br \/>\nFizzy Tablets (Alka-seltzer type tablets work well)<br \/>\nSome cooking oil (mineral oil or baby oil also work well)<br \/>\nWater<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Food coloring can stain so be sure you are wearing clothes that are ok to get dirty.\u00a0 Be sure to protect your work surface too.<\/li>\n<li>Put a few drops of food coloring in your tube.<\/li>\n<li>Fill the tube about half way with oil.\u00a0 What did the food coloring do?<\/li>\n<li>Now fill the rest of the tube with water.\u00a0 What did the food coloring do this time?<\/li>\n<li>Put the cap on your tube and gently shake the tube to mix everything together.\u00a0 Let it sit for a few minutes and watch what happens.<\/li>\n<li>Once everything settles back down, you&#8217;ll have two layers &#8211;
